ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TESTS
|
English language proficiency tests are designed to determine a person's level of English language ability. Around the world, there are different tests administered by different authorities, which may test slightly different skills. The main English language proficiency tests for international students applying to universities and colleges in the US are
- TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language
- TOEIC: Test of English for International Communication
- IELTS: International English Language Testing System
These English language proficiency tests are administered online or at test centres in various countries (for instance, IELTS tests are given in 120 countries). English language proficiency test scores are used by many, if not most, educational institutions in the US as a measure of a student's language level. Some schools require international students to achieve certain scores on certain tests in order to be admitted. In other cases, the language test acts as a diagnostic, allowing the school to see which in level the student would be best placed.
Not all universities and colleges in the US accept each tests: be sure to find out which English language proficiency tests are used and accepted by the schools you are applying to. The tests may be given on particular dates, sometimes known as "sittings," so be sure to find out when and where to take your English language proficiency test so that the school can get your scores by the appropriate deadline.
